Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 2026
Dad's Academy is a learning app for children in kindergarten through grade 9, with a Command Center for their parents. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and what control you have over it. We've tried to write it plainly. If something is unclear, write to us (see Contact us below) and we'll answer.
The short version
- The account belongs to the parent. Children don't sign up on their own. A parent or legal guardian creates the account, adds each child, and controls every setting.
- We sell to you, never past your child. Children see no advertising and are never asked to buy anything. We don't sell personal information, and we don't use a child's information for advertising of any kind.
- We collect what the learning needs, and little else. That means answers, progress, and time spent practising, plus the classroom topics you choose to share with us.
- The Windows companion records what it needs to enforce your rules. If you install it, it keeps a log of which apps and websites were used during earned screen time. You can see and delete that log. We describe it in full below.
- You can see, correct, download or delete your family's information at any time, from the Command Center or by writing to us.
1. Who we are
Dad's Academy is operated by Blue Ocean Ventures Inc., a company based in British Columbia, Canada ("we", "us"). We are responsible for the personal information described here. You can reach our Privacy Officer at hello@bov.ai.
2. Who this policy covers
- Parents and guardians who create an account (the "account holder"). You must be 18 or older, or the age of majority where you live.
- Children ("cadets") who use Dad's Academy under an account holder's supervision.
- Visitors to our public website, including anyone who tries a sample question at dads.academy/try without an account.
3. What we collect
From you, the parent
- Name, email address and password, or your Google sign-in if you choose that option. From Google we receive only your name, email address and profile picture.
- Billing details. Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. We receive a record of your plan, seats, billing country and payment status.
- What you tell us about your children (below), the messages you send us, and the questions you ask Pip, the AI coach in the Command Center.
About your child (which you, or your child under your supervision, provide)
- A first name or nickname, a grade, and a cadet username and PIN. We don't need your child's surname, birth date, email address, photo or school. Please don't enter them.
- Learning activity: questions answered, answers given, correct or incorrect, time on task, subject levels, streaks and rewards.
- "This Week at School" submissions: the text or photos of class topics that you or your child upload so that practice matches the classroom. Please photograph the work, not faces or names. Photos are read by our AI provider (§6) to pick out the topic, and are deleted as soon as the topics have been extracted.
From the Windows companion (only if you install it)
The companion is an optional Windows app that requires the paid plan. It keeps your child's PC locked to learning until screen time is earned or you grant it. To do its job, the companion records:
- when the PC was locked and unlocked, and how many minutes of screen time were earned, granted and used;
- the names of the apps that were open and the full website addresses (URLs) visited while the PC was unlocked. It doesn't record window titles, and it doesn't take screenshots;
- a device identifier, the Windows version, the companion version and regular "heartbeat" signals, so we can tell whether it's running.
These logs appear in your Command Center. We use them to enforce the rules you set, to show you how screen time was spent, and to fix problems with the companion. We don't use them for advertising, we don't build profiles from them, and we don't sell them. They are deleted automatically after 90 days, and you can delete them sooner.
When anyone visits our website
- Standard server logs: IP address, browser type, the pages requested and the time of each request. We use these for security and to keep the service running.
- On /try, where a parent and child try one question without an account, we record the grade chosen and whether the answer was correct, so we can improve the questions. We don't ask for, or keep, a name or anything else that identifies the child.
- Advertising measurement. We don't use any advertising or analytics measurement today. We may use it in future on our public marketing pages only: the home page, /try, /signup, /pricing, and our guides and comparison pages. We never use it inside your child's experience: not on the cadet sign-in, the learning app, the Command Center, or the Windows companion. Any conversion information we share with an advertising platform is limited to a scrambled (hashed) copy of the parent's email address and the fact that an account was created or a plan was purchased. Children's names, usernames, answers and companion logs are never shared. We'll list any measurement tools here before we start using them.
- Cookies: today we use only the cookies needed for sign-in and security. Measurement cookies, if we ever use them, will be set only on the public pages listed above.
4. How we use information
- To run Dad's Academy: to deliver practice, adapt difficulty to each subject, show progress in the Command Center, and enforce your screen-time rules.
- To answer your questions through Pip and through our support.
- To bill you, and to prevent fraud and abuse.
- To improve our questions and features, using de-identified or aggregated data where we can.
- To tell you about your account. We send marketing email to parents only, only with your agreement, and you can unsubscribe in one click. We never contact your child.
We don't sell personal information. We don't show advertising to children. We don't use a child's information to build an advertising profile or to target ads anywhere.
5. Children's privacy (COPPA, PIPEDA and BC PIPA)
Dad's Academy is designed for children. We follow the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (BC PIPA).
- Parental consent comes first. We collect a child's information only after a parent has created an account, read this notice, added that child, and confirmed that they are the child's parent or guardian and consent.
- We collect only what's reasonably necessary for the activity. We never make a child hand over more information to play.
- Parents' rights: you can review your child's information, have it corrected or deleted, and refuse further collection at any time, without losing your own account. Use the Command Center or write to our Privacy Officer.
- No disclosure to third parties for their own purposes. Service providers process children's information only on our behalf, to run the service (§6).
- Security and retention: we protect children's information as described in §9, and we keep it only as long as it's needed for the purpose it was collected for (§8).
- If we learn that we've collected a child's information without a parent's consent, we will delete it.
7. Where information is stored
Your information is stored in Canada. Some of our service providers (for example web hosting, AI, email and payments) may process it in the United States. While it's there, it may be accessible to courts and authorities in that country. We choose providers that protect it to a standard comparable to Canadian law.
8. How long we keep it
- Account and learning history, child profiles and companion logs: for as long as the account is open. After you close the account, they are deleted within 30 days.
- Billing records (parent information only): kept for 6 years, as the Canada Revenue Agency requires.
- Windows companion logs: deleted automatically after 90 days, or sooner if you delete them.
- "This Week at School" photos: deleted as soon as the topics have been extracted.
- /try sample answers: kept only in de-identified form.
9. Security
We encrypt information in transit, limit staff access to what each person needs, and use providers with strong security practices. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify you and the relevant privacy commissioner(s) as the law requires.
10. Your choices and rights
Wherever you live, you can ask to access, correct, download or delete your family's information, and you can withdraw consent (for example by removing a child's profile or uninstalling the companion). Most of this can be done in the Command Center. For anything else, write to hello@bov.ai and we'll respond within 30 days. If you're not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, or, in the United States, the Federal Trade Commission.
11. Changes to this policy
If we make a material change, especially to how children's information is used, we'll tell account holders by email before it takes effect, and we'll ask for fresh consent where the law requires it.
